What To Expect
1
Dierkes Lake
Begin your hike on a well marked moderate loop trail that takes you to two hidden lakes, one with extraordinary geologic formations and the other with bird wildlife in its own marshy sanctuary. Ascend the trail to the south rim of the Snake River Canyon and look down onto magnificent views of the winding Snake River. Look for birds of prey soaring through the Snake River Canyon as you enjoy hidden waterfalls bursting out of its canyon walls below.
2
Shoshone Falls
Take a short one mile drive from Dierkes Lake over to Shoshone Falls, known as "the Niagara of the west". There, you will find yourself surrounded in ancient volcanic geologic history as your interpretive guide takes you back in time more than 15,000 years when Lake Bonneville overflowed its rim some 300 miles away ripping away Idaho's terrain and creating this stunning natural wonder ranked as one of the top three waterfalls in the United States. Walk down onto the main viewing platform for an up close experience and spectacular views just yards from the top of the flowing falls. This famous waterfall stands 212 feet high and spans 950 feet across the Snake River Canyon.
