Custer State Park, South Dakota's first and largest state park, spans over 71,000 acres in the heart of the Black Hills. Established in 1912, it showcases diverse landscapes, including rolling prairies, pine forests, and dramatic granite peaks. The park is famous for its abundant wildlife, including a free-roaming herd of around 1,500 bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, and curious burros. Visitors can explore scenic drives like the Wildlife Loop Road and Needles Highway, hike picturesque trails, fish in pristine lakes, or experience the annual Buffalo Roundup, a thrilling and unique event.
