Eleven Mile Canyon Recreation Area
Eleven Mile Canyon, nestled just south of Lake George, offers a serene escape into nature's beauty. Once the route of the historic Colorado Midland Railroad, the canyon now features a scenic dirt road passing through tunnels as it meanders alongside the South Platte River, framed by towering granite walls and lush pine forests. Rita the Rock Planter
Rita the Rock Planter is a captivating 21-foot-tall wooden troll sculpture located near Victor, just south of Cripple Creek. Created in August 2023 by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, Rita is crafted entirely from recycled wood and was constructed with the help of over 100 volunteers. She is depicted kneeling and carefully placing rocks, symbolizing the restoration of the land affected by historical mining activities in the area. Phantom Canyon Road
Phantom Canyon Road is a scenic and historic unpaved route that connects Cañon City to Victor. Originally the path of the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad built in 1894, it served as a vital link to the goldfields of Cripple Creek and Victor during Colorado's gold rush era. Today, the road offers travelers a journey through rugged canyons, historic tunnels, and over elevated bridges providing diverse landscapes and opportunities to observe local wildlife. Shelf Road
Shelf Road is a historic and scenic route that connects Cañon City to Cripple Creek. Constructed in 1892 as a toll road, it was originally used by stagecoaches and freight wagons transporting goods to and from the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District. The road is renowned for a five-mile stretch known as "The Shelf," where it clings to sheer limestone cliffs above Fourmile Creek, offering dramatic views of the surrounding canyons. Upper Gold Camp Road
Gold Camp Road is a historic and scenic route that winds around the back side of Pikes Peak, through the mountains between Colorado Springs and the former mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. Originally constructed in the late 19th century as part of the Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek District Railway, the route was known as the "Short Line" and served as a vital transportation corridor during the gold rush era. After the railway ceased operations in the early 20th century, the corridor was converted into a roadway, allowing for vehicular travel through the picturesque terrain. Today, Gold Camp Road offers travelers a journey through dense forests, along rugged cliffs, and past historic tunnels that were once part of the railway system.
